MOVIE NIGHT MAY 12: COURTNEY'S CINEMA
Hey darlings, I have loved getting to know each of you better through the world of Cinema! I think we’ve all taken a varied approach to what kind of films we’ll present during our movie week, and for me, these are my Underrated Camp Faves. One could argue that Bound and JAWS aren’t really camp, but you’d have to see this full program to be able to discuss. ;P Please find a little about each of my (4) picks below: Bound: The Wachowski sisters’ (of The Matrix fame) directing debut, this sexy, campy lesbian neo noir crime thriller features an amazing cast delivering peak career performances. Showgirls: This film is often called “one of the worst films of all time,” but considering director Paul Verhoeven’s satirical style, this film becomes a scintillating exploration of Hollywood and the commodification of the female body in America. It has the most random cast of all time, and feels like it was made by an alien thrown into American culture. I would absolutely LOVE to hear all y’alls thoughts on this one. The one thing to flag is that it is aggressively sexual and features one assault scene, so totally understand if it’s not the vibe for everyone. Drop Dead Gorgeous: What isn’t to love about this movie? A stacked cast delivering comedy camp GENIUS through the lens of middle America beauty pageants. This is one of the most underrated comedies of all time, and a secret career highlight for the likes of Amy Adams, Brittany Murphy, Allison Janney, and more. JAWS: My favorite film of all time, the one I could watch again and again. It’s giving sharks, suspense, quiet family moments, incredible side characters, and guys being Dudes. In my opinion, this is the greatest meditation on masculinity of the 20th century. You can fight me about that after we’ve watched it.
