Linking Your Account

How to connect your Movie Night Polls account to the Discord, Slack, and Telegram bots — and what that linking actually does.

Why link?

Hosting a poll on any chat platform requires a linked Pro account. Linking is also how your bot votes and your web votes get recognized as the same person — without linking, your votes on different platforms count as separate voters.

Voters don't need to link. Anyone in a channel, workspace, or group can vote on a poll without an account.

How linking works

On the bot side, you run the platform's link command:

Discord: /movienight link in any channel.
Slack: /movienight link in any channel.
Telegram: /link in the bot's DM.

The bot replies (privately) with a one-time URL that expires in 15 minutes. Click it, sign in to your Movie Night Polls account (existing or new), and confirm. Your platform identity and your Movie Night Polls account are now linked.

Pro is required to link

Only Pro accounts can complete linking — the redeem step checks for an active Pro subscription. If you start the link flow without Pro, you'll be prompted to upgrade before the link completes. See Pro features.

One account per platform identity

Each platform identity (your Discord user, your Slack workspace + user pair, your Telegram user) can be linked to one Movie Night Polls account at a time. If you want to switch which account is linked, run the platform's unlink command first, then re-link.

What gets shared

The only thing the bot stores about you is the mapping between your platform user ID and your Movie Night Polls account ID, plus (optionally) your display name on the platform so polls can show who created them. No messages, channels, contacts, or unrelated data are read or stored.

Cross-platform vote sync

Once you're linked on a platform, votes you cast there are attributed to your Movie Night Polls account. If a poll exists in multiple places (e.g., shared from Discord to Slack, or to the web), your vote counts once across all of them. Voters who aren't linked are tracked separately per platform.

Unlinking

Unlinking removes the platform-to-account mapping but doesn't delete your polls or your Movie Night Polls account.

Discord: /movienight unlink.
Slack: /movienight unlink.
Telegram: /unlink in the bot DM.
