How to plan a Halloween movie marathon
A marathon lives or dies on two things: the lineup and the running order. Here's how to get both right โ with real runtimes.

Halloween falls on a Saturday in 2026, which makes this the rare year a proper marathon is realistic: start in the late afternoon, finish before midnight, and nobody has work in the morning. The catch is that marathons collapse in predictable ways โ too many films, the scariest one first, and a two-hour debate over what to put on next. Here's how to avoid all three.
Pick three films, not five
Three films is the sweet spot. It's four to five hours of screen time, which leaves room for breaks, food and the inevitable "wait, go back" moments. Five films sounds heroic and ends with half the room asleep by film four.
Runtimes matter more than you'd think. The classic slashers are short โ Halloween and A Nightmare on Elm Street both run 91 minutes โ while The Shining (144 minutes) and Midsommar (147) can eat half your night on their own. Mix one long film with two short ones, never three long ones.
Go from light to dark
Run the night like a playlist: start lighter, end scariest. Open with something fun while people are still arriving and talking, put a horror-comedy in the middle, and save the genuinely frightening film for when it's dark outside and the room has settled.
If kids are coming, the order also solves the bedtime problem โ the family-friendly opener plays first, and the adults move on to the scary stuff after the little ones head to bed.
Four lineups that work
The family marathon: It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (25 minutes, rated G), Hotel Transylvania (91) and Hocus Pocus (96). That's about three and a half hours of screen time, and nothing above a PG.
The slasher triple bill: Halloween (91), A Nightmare on Elm Street (91), then Scream (112) as the closer โ it's a movie about people who've seen the first two, so it lands best last. Just under five hours.
The party crowd: Shaun of the Dead (99), What We Do in the Shadows (86) and Trick 'r Treat (82). About four and a half hours, scary enough for the occasion and funny enough for a room that's talking over it.
New blood: Weapons (129) and Sinners (138). Two long films is a full four-and-a-half-hour night on its own โ don't add a third.
Each of these is a ready-made list on our Halloween movie night page, along with the modern and 2025โ26 horror lineups.
Let the group pick the lineup
The fastest way to kill a marathon is deciding film two while film one's credits roll. Settle the whole lineup before the night: put five or six options in a poll, let everyone vote, and run the top three in light-to-dark order.
Close the vote the day before so everyone knows what's playing. With Pro, a scheduled poll closes itself on time, and a printable QR flyer on the door lets guests vote on the night's last slot as they arrive.
Plan the breaks, not just the films
Put a 15-minute break between films and you'll keep everyone for the whole night. Work backwards from when the night needs to end โ the youngest guest's bedtime or the last train home โ and you'll know how long your lineup can be before you pick a single film.

FAQ
- How long is a Halloween movie marathon?
- Three films is usually four to five hours of screen time, plus breaks. Check runtimes before you lock the lineup โ the classic slashers run about 90 minutes, while some modern horror runs well past two hours.
- What order should I watch Halloween movies in?
- Light to dark: start with something fun or family-friendly, put a horror-comedy in the middle, and finish with the scariest film once it's dark outside.
- Should a Halloween marathon follow one franchise?
- It can, but franchise marathons get repetitive fast. The first two or three entries of a series usually make a better night than watching every sequel in order โ or mix one franchise opener with films from other lineups.
